PPROSTATE BIOPSY- Pathway
PROSTATE BIOPSY
A prostate biopsy is a diagnostic test to help get a tissue diagnosis.
You will be asked to take some antibiotics and some laxatives prior to
this. The instructions for the same are available. The procedure will take
between 15 to 20 minutes however please keep between one to two hours
free on this day.
The Day of your appointment.
Mr.Godbole will again explain the test to you and ask you sign a consent
form when you have understood fully what he has said. You will then be
asked to lie on a couch on your side with your knees drawn up towards
your chin so that he can examine you via the back passage (anus).
The
doctor will then put a gloved finger into your back passage to feel your
prostate through the back passage wall. You will then be given an
antibiotic injection before the biopsy.
The Biopsy
The test is done while you are awake. It is not painful but is
uncomfortable. Still lying on your side, a small probe with a needle
attached is inserted into your back passage and an image of your prostate
can be seen a screen.
Local anesthetic will be injected around the
prostate before taking the biopsies. The biopsy needle is then used to take
samples of your prostate, which will be sent for an examination under the
microscope. The doctor will explain through out the test what he is doing.
It can take up to a week to process the tissue in the laboratory and then it
will be reported.
